What the extra $50–115 actually buys
- A reservation you could not get. The operator holds group allocations; that is the product. In season this is worth the entire difference.
- A guide on headsets for the fifteen minutes. The room is dim, the mural is fourteen feet high, and you have 900 seconds. Someone saying “look at the salt cellar, look at where the perspective lines meet, now turn round for the Crucifixion” changes what you see.
- In the bundles: Milan. The walking, Duomo and castle versions are half a day of city for the extra $30–40.
When the official €15 is the right buy
- You are booking the day the block opens and are happy on your own.
- You are visiting November–March, when slots linger.
- You are under 25 — €2 or free is unbeatable, and a tour is priced the same for you as for an adult.
When the tour is the right buy even if you could get the €15
- You want the fifteen minutes explained (most first-timers do, in hindsight).
- Your dates are fixed and you cannot afford the release gamble.
- You want the Duomo or the castle in the same outing without organising two tickets.
Small print that costs money
- Official tickets are named and non-transferable; late arrival (30 minutes before the slot at the ticket office) forfeits the ticket.
- Guided tours on the platform carry free cancellation (check the cut-off on each listing).
- Children on tours are priced by the operator; the museum’s own under-18 free rule applies only to official tickets.
